Highway Vehicle Breakdowns: Important Safety Dos And Don'ts For Drivers

Posted on

When your vehicle breaks down on the highway versus on a quiet, residential road, there are some additional safety measures and precautions that must be taken to keep yourself and other drivers safe. Simply put, patience is a virtue when you're dealing with a highway breakdown, and there are a few important dos and don'ts you'll want to follow to ensure you get the help you need as promptly as possible.

DO Keep Copies of Roadside Policies in the Car

If you have a roadside assistance policy as part of your  insurance coverage, be sure to keep a copy of it in your vehicle glove box. This way, you can have all the information you need readily available to contact a tow truck service or other roadside assistance as needed. Depending on your coverage, you may also need to show a copy of your roadside assistance policy or membership card when your help arrives.

DON'T Try to Flag Down Passing Motorists

While it might be tempting to accept help from passing motorists, it's actually best for your own safety to just wait until professional assistance arrives. Unfortunately, you never know a stranger's intentions these days. At the very least, make sure a police officer or state trooper is standing by with you at your vehicle before you accept any assistance from a passing motorist or supposed good Samaritan.

DO Remain Inside the Vehicle Until Help Arrives

This safety tip is especially important for vehicle breakdowns that occur on the freeway. Of course, you know to move your car to the side of the road and turn on your hazard lights, but what many drivers don't understand is that they should remain in their vehicles until help arrives if at all possible. Even if the fix seems like it will be quick and easy, the risk of injury or death from a passing vehicle is too great when you step out of your car. Except for a life-or-death situation (such as your car catching on fire), remain in your vehicle until your tow truck or a police officer arrives.

DON'T Be Caught without an Emergency Kit

Keep yourself safe in emergency situations and vehicle breakdowns by always having an emergency kit on-hand. This kit should include road flares, reflectors, jumper cables, and other tools to keep your safe in the event of a breakdown. You can pick these up at most grocery stores and auto supply stores, so don't be caught without one.
